Lyrics (Life Experiment 101)

Little Gestures

Derek Chua

This breezy, sing-along song attributes its melody to the Freshman’s album producer Jim Lim, and Victor Tang – a freshman in the Chinese song writing industry.

The lyrics were written, re-written and re-written again by the Freshman and two of their fabulous friends, only to be finally completed when Carrie etched in the last lines in the recording studio.

A different type of love song, Little Gestures is one for romancing mom and dad, your lover, your teacher or your friend. It acknowledges love in the smallest of actions and extols the joy that comes with gratitude. Sweet!

See-Through

This pensive ballad worked its way from the heart of the Freshman’s album producer Jim Lim, who composed and performed it on the demo, to the souls of the two girls. It remains one of the Freshman’s favourite songs on the album.

Unlike most other duets, a large part of See-through is sung solo. Only Diya sings in the first part of this song, carefully, intricately, about the trepidations and fears of committing to a relationship. Carrie comes in the second part with a different story, and she is certain, unafraid, and goes all out for love.

Much like a looking glass into the girls’ different perspectives on relationships, See-through juggles and balances these two extreme narratives that eventually culminates to the same hurtful end, questioning the failure of the romance.

The Mandarin title of the song literally translates to “too transparent”, for the girls had become diaphanous in this song, and their thoughts and emotions in love lay vulnerable and bare. Those who have ever loved must be able to relate.

Strong Front

Terence Teo

A Strong Front is an emotive ballad composed and produced by Kelvin Quah, with lyrics specially written for the Freshman by Xiaohan. It is the only song in the album whose lyrics are not penned by either of the girls, yet they hold this song dear for it is beautifully written and cuts closely to both their characters.

There is an oft-overlooked struggle, still prevalent in this time and space, for the female of the species to behave in a certain meekness of manner. Sure, they put on jeans and earn their own keep, but at the same time, they are expected to display nothing less than a ladylike decorum of gentleness and demureness.

Girls are made of water, girls are made of candy, and girls, at the end of the day, are not allowed to replace their tears with honest, blatant expressions, for feminine wiles win them favour. So they learn to put up a strong front at times and a weak front other times, while a neglected tension builds up in their hearts and minds. The modern day female is a paradox of confidence and insecurities and the Freshman relates to that.

4.Polaroid

Producer

帶著我的holga and polaroid
take a little ride

背著我的 guitar and polaroid
take a little break

All through the day and
All through the night

I wanna take a little break
Take a little ride

Polaroid’s infectious verse and pre-chorus were composed by Nic Lee of the local band Mi Lu Bing (迷路兵). Not a newbie to the industry, Nic has made many of the songs on his band’s own albums but Polaroid is the first song he has ever written for someone else.

The song is arranged by Ngakus Ng, no stranger in the music industry but a freshman in music arrangement and he pulls it off with a cacophony of flower-power fun. Ngakus collaged snapshots of interesting sounds apart from the main guitar and keyboard line, which reinforced the imagery of the song and heightened the listening experience to a whole new level of shiok.

Polaroid’s lyrics were penned specially for Diya by Carrie, who drew inspiration from two of Diya’s greatest pastimes – taking music and playing pictures, I mean, playing music and taking pictures. Polaroid sings of a carefree and free-spirited celebration of life, like an album of images, it brings attention to the beautiful details in the manuscript of this rainbow-coloured world. This is also the first complete set of lyrics by Carrie.

Life Experiment 101

The main plug of the album, Life Experiment 101 was tailored by Jim Lim for the Freshman, upon request by the Freshman for a vibrant and catchy song that will not render them into the category of the “sweet young things”. Jim took up this challenge and eventually found inspiration on a day out to the Singapore Zoological Gardens. Roarrrr!!!

This song is the Freshman’s shout out to the world on their attitude to life. While failures and unhappiness might seem unendurable, they are but part and parcel of life and no less important than the good times! In the bigger scheme of things, all are mere statistics collected in life’s experiment propelling one to achieve better and more. So hang on and hang around to hang out!

Of course, taking on an experimental attitude does not mean going down the wayward path “for experiment’s sake”. It means being observant and ready as a sponge to absorb the lessons that can be learnt through different experiences in life. It also means being ready for failures, just as how science experiments in school always seem to go wrong. Bugger.

Tumbling Kelly

Tumbling Kelly is a doll that always “rights itself when thrown down”. A person who rises up again and again in the face of life’s obstacles and adversities is often referred to as a Tumbling Kelly.

This Tumbling Kelly, composed by Kelvin Quah and written by two lyric-writing freshies, is quite a character. Carrie collaborated with Nicole Chen for the lyrics, channelling into words their frustrations with the rigid rules and silly games of the adult world. In many ways, humans are but puppets of the society, struggling as they live a dictated life and struggling again to remain true to the self.

If there’s no escaping this predicament, why not then spring back up whenever pushed down? Be ready for another go, just like Tumbling Kelly.

Written by one half of the Freshman, this is Diya’s first complete assignment. She penned both the melody and lyrics to this song, and Damned Memories is a personal piece of work that holds an important place in her heart.

Memories can be at the same time deliciously nostalgic and fatally hurtful. It is a paradox and a conundrum, and one is unable to move away from it no matter how much one understands it as a necessary move. Logic says to let go, but the heart says no, and so the battles within continues. Yet regardless of the battles that rage or the continuing but futile attempts to abandon the world, the world spins on and on.

One then discovers that it is the world that has abandoned us in its never-ceasing cycle. One can only wait for time to pass, and to accept that these Damned Memories are part of what builds us up in this life.

Producer
Terence Teo

The 1920s in China was a time when womenfolk began their fight for a rightful place next to men in society. The era carries the significance of courage and strength for women, as they forged on amidst continued efforts to keep them in their place. 1924 is about a forbidden love of that time.

Inspired by the melody, Carrie had read up on Chinese literature from the period before coming up with the theme of this song. She is deeply moved by the women of that time who, against the feudalistic objections of the society, chose to remain single for the rest of their lives for a love that could not be fulfilled.

9. 標准答案 correct answer, not!

Correct Answer, Not! is a direct commentary towards the current state of the music industry. It is one of the last few songs on the album to be recorded, and one of Carrie’s proudest works – she wrote the candid lyrics. The effervescent melody was composed by Connie Wu.

The song expresses the unanswered questions and frustrations towards the music industry, as well as life in general, as both the industry and life become increasingly convoluted and complex. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and everyone seems to have one, but there never is a model solution that all can agree with. Neither is there a sure-win formula for one and all in life and in music. This is a complicated matter.

But just as our math teacher has taught us to simplify the fractions before solving the problem, the Freshman suggests through this song that simplification may just be the key to life.

Rotten People Club (The RPC)

Oh God~

Welcome to Rotten People Club. A song written by the Freshman, about the Freshman, composed and produced by David Tan (co-produced by Jim Lim).

This song took the shortest time to record, perhaps because the girls were in their most laid-back and goofiest mood. It runs as a conversation between the Carrie and Diya, lamenting one another’s quirks and idiosyncrasies. So one of them buys too many shoes and the other can’t seem to be on time, so what? The Rotten People Club is about embracing the imperfections that make people human and special. After all, the cliché did warn us that we are all unique, just like everybody else.

The Freshman would like to welcome all you flawed individuals to the Rotten People Club, with open arms, wobbly bellies and a hearty laugh! Hah!
